Quality electrical wiring seems to be a constant problem with Homestead in 140 Erskine Avenue.

When I moved in, I found this wonderful piece of workmanship in the fuse box. Luckily I noticed and only had it repaired after threatening to approach the City about the clear fire code infraction (https://instagram.com/p/ZepcXkEVy7/), along with a series of additional problems generating a total of 16 additional work orders before even moving in. This is the “quality” you can expect from their, “newly renovated units.”

Tonight, I come home from a night out, turn on my kitchen light and am greeted with a fireworks display of sparks and smoke emanating from the light fixture. I call the superintendent, and what do I get? No answer. Luckily, whatever was destroyed by their shitty wiring job seems to not have caused a full-on fire.

Trying to track down the number of the clowns in charge of this building is what actually brought me to this page. i’m happy to see I’m not the only person who thinks poorly of this poorly run circus.

    Hello,

First off, this blog is a GREAT idea and I wish all buildings had this! I am considering moving into 110 Erskine and wanted to know from the people who already live there how they feel about the place. Would you recommend it? How good is the maintenance? How about safety? I’m a bit worried after reading the posts above. Any info you could give me is most appreciated.

    Thanks so much!

Hello – thanks for the comment, it’s good to know there’s an online community to look out for each.
What the Tenant’s on my floor who were broken into said was that their locks were broken into with a crow bar.
From doing some online research, as a Tenant it would seem you are well within your right to request a bolt style of lock on your door. We have a bolt (to go with our dog) on our door, which may be why ours has not been broken into. The units that were broken into (and the Homestead employee on our floor) now have 2 or 3 bolt locks on their doors. Maybe this is a good preventative measure to be taken?
Even though this is worrisome – I hope you’re loving the neighbourhood!

    Hello;
I just found this site and I have to say, I wish there was something posted in the Building sharing this site. This is a great tool!!
As my partner and I were leaving to walk our dog last night, we saw all of our neighbours on our floor meeting in the hallway. They called us over and let us know that on our floor, there have been 3 break-ins in the last 3 months.
We chatted for awhile, and it looks to me like your only rights as a Tenant are to ask for a proper lock on your door.
I cannot believe that these break-ins haven’t been reported to the Tenants at our building. There was a brief note a week or so ago posted by Management that said to be careful. Every time I see the Building Manager, he tells me to lock my door constantly, but I didn’t realize why.
I love this area, and I really like the building. Our unit has not been broken into, but I am very afraid that this will happen soon, as 3 units on my floor have already been broken into.
We live on the same floor as one of the Building Management staff, and we are not that close to the ground floor. The first apartment that was targeted was directly across from the elevators, and all 3 of the break-ins occured between 12-3 in the afternoon.
We are considering starting a petition for security cameras installed in the building. I would love to hear thoughts and opinions on this subject!!
Thank you for this great forum for issues, information and discussion!

I just moved into this building not too long ago and reading your post definitely worries me. I would be happy to sign your petition if you make one. I would also like to know how the break-ins occurred, as it seemed to me that the locks on the doors cannot be easily picked by a credit card or other small tool.

I really hope no one else has been broken into and that whoever was doing the break-ins has been caught!
